When to use battery tender?

1.) In a perfect world, if you knew exactly how long your bike would sit without being ridden, at what point would you get a battery tender / trickle charger?
One week?
Two weeks?
A month or more?
2.) If you couldn't ride (weather etc.) and didn't have a battery tender, does starting the bike and letting it idle for a bit help keep the battery fully charged?

So this thread has me wondering - where do you leave your tenders quick disconnect cable? Recently put the quick disconnect with LED on my 2012 Sportster but can't decide where to leave the cable out, was hoping to hook it up to the 12V accessory port but the OEM one is entirely to big until I get a bag of some sort.
