Default Voltage Regulator Question

I tried asked this on what I thought would be the relevant forum, but haven't had any response. Maybe here I could get something?

Just a quicky question:

I've had a chrome voltage regulator sitting in the box for probably a year and decided since it was so damn cold outside, I'd do something to the bike instead of watching TV.

I pulled the little chrome grill off that was on there and getting the regulator out was no big shake. But as I was putting the new one in, I realize the plug going to the stator is not polarized. One plug is the Packard locking style (obviously polarized) but the other is simply a round two-pin plug. Checked the shop manual and it only says to "mate the two," but without any polarity or markings on it, I'm wondering which way it should be "mated" or if maybe the stator doesn't care. Seems like it ought to, but what do I know.

Anyone done one of these? [sm=confused06.gif]

Thanks.

Default RE: Voltage Regulator Question

That's the output of the stator winding going to the regulator. That's an AC signal floating above ground. Doesn't matter which way it connects.

Default RE: Voltage Regulator Question

Thanks. olesalt! That's pretty much the conclusion I had come to, but I just wanted to be sure. I guess what they call a "Voltage Regulator" is more accurately a "Voltage Rectifier with Regulation."

Appreciate your response and I'll go plug it in without fear of a column of smoke rising from the finned chrome thingy.
