Best stage 1 air cleaner?

Looks are completely subjective. Our price is good, but not the cheapest, performance is better than most, and as good (or very close) to the best.

dk is more than eyecandy..... you can see by just looking around this place they provide a good product and customer service par none. By the way, i have never purchased anything from them but it is clear they are good.

for performance, from what I've read, I think the NRHS 3" Hurricane is one of the best. May not meet your price criteria though.
for price/looks/performance I think it's pretty hard to beat DK.
but for my own, I agree with Rickss69, nothing beats the classic looks of an S&S. With a K&N filter they perform as good as most afaik. But they aren't cheap.

Yup, the S&S classic teardrop is what I went for as well on my 2005 XL1200R. It opened up the intake nicely and required a #48 pilot and #185 main jet to supply the extra juice to keep up with the increased airflow. Solid performance and smooth running throughout the entire RPM range. One of the best mods I made.

Alright, here's what I think.
Not sure how objective is the chart provided by K&N. I tend to think they dynoed a stock bike first, then added their intake and corrected fuel maps for second run. The thing here is the first run should have be done with dialed in fuel, too, for stock intake.
DK Customs makes nice things, sure, and customers say nice things, too. Talk does not add any performance while on the street, may add some in the pub, though.
In actuality, intake can be tuned. Properly tuned intake will help with fill rate in mid-high and high RPM range. Whether any of Sporty intakes are tuned - I do not know.

Figure Machine has a great selection http://www.figuremachine.com/#xl-all
I purchased the R5 which has a 5" K&N filter (http://www.figuremachine.com/product...5/xlflowr5.php) and you can get custom machined face plates.
If I could do it over again I would have got the Xflow for $30 more http://www.figuremachine.com/product...-c/xlflowc.php
A little higher quality than the DK filter but twice the price of DK.
I'm happy with my purchase but I think DK has the best value and customer service around
