Default Mixed answers about first service??

Hi, my first service is coming up and my dealer quoted me £240! But i asked the parts guy if i bought the oils and filter from dealer and kept reciepts can i do myself and still keep warranty intact? he went off and asked someone else and came back and said yes? when i got home i rang another dealer who told me a dealer had to carry out service while in warranty? i bumbed into the salesman who sold me the bike last night and he told me it had to be done by a vat registered garage with genuine parts if not a dealership? then in the handbook it says some countries you may be required to take back to your dealer for servicing, please check??
Can anyone shed any light? i am in uk so it may differ from the usa?
If the dealer has to do it then fair enough but just figure if i do it i can save about £180!!
Help??????/

This may have to do with local laws. I think here in the US they must recognize your own service if you have a logbook with appropriate entry. You may want to talk to somebody who knows about customer protection laws.

+1 - In the US there's no problem doing it yourself due to consumer protection laws. I don't know about the UK.

I'm sure someone from the UK will pop in with the answer. Where's grbrown?

Yea the first service is expensive. I plan on using the dealer for the first 1000 mile service, just to get it on the books.

Then I will do the rest of the servicing myself.

Are you on XLforum.net? There are quite a few guys on there from the UK. I would ask over there as well. You may want to find whatever government agency covers registered garages and see if they have the answer for you. A dealer may try scare you into getting the service done with them. Then again, it could be true that they have to do it. You definitely want an answer on this, preferably with documentation either way why or why not.

Do you have the service manual?

just spoken to hd warranty dept and they said i cant do my own servicing but i can use another motorcycle workshop that isnt a harley garage or harley approved. Then i found a harley specialist custom bike shop near me and spoke to the guy and he quoted me half the price of stealer and said use genuine parts and oils, i asked him about changing the transmission oil and he said no just check on a first service but my book says and stealer says to change?? so then i think does this gut know his stuff? aarrgghhhhh dont know what to do???

This is the reason I buy Garage Queens. Warranties are nice, but a pain. I would rather not have to deal with them myself, so I get bikes that are out of warranty. If my wife weren't so finicky about driving a used car, I wouldn't buy a car with a warranty either. Besides, half the fun of owning such machines is maintaining and/or fixing them myself, my nosy, annoying !@#$% of a neighbor not withstanding.

I would think that the tranny oil should be changed, not just checked. You're not changing the oil because the oil is "worn out". You're changing it get the metallic crap out of the tranny case from the break in.

See whether you can't get a list of required work from the dealer and give that to your independent. Remind him that this is required in order to keep your warranty valid with HD.

Ok just had my 1st service done on my nightster.
£228.34p
1ltr 20w50 oil x 3
o-ring
clutch gasket
chain inspection gasket
lubricants
oil filter
Im led to believe that you do not have to use the dealer as this is a breach of the competition laws but if you choose to use someone else they must use H_D approved parts/oils and adhere to the H_D service schedule.
im in Cambridge
