So here's the update I said I would do.
The Energy One Extra Plate with Spring Tool Kit came in today. On a short aside, I was left unsatisfied with their customer service. I had heard stories about people asking for discounts and getting around $20 off. I send them a email and never heard back. I also made a note with my order asking about upgrading it to overnight shipping because my bike is my daily driver. Never heard back about that either.
I opened up the cover, opened up the clutch pack (**** THAT SNAP RING), and look what is there to greet me:
RIVETS! So it turns out that I was spot on with my diagnosis. I KNEW something was wrong. I'm on my bike every day and know how it feels/sounds/smells. Here's the little bugger that was causing all the trouble:
All together install took 4:16. Yes I timed it. I want to say a good hour or so was spent getting that damn snap ring off and then back on. HUGE pain. Even with the compression tool. Super doable though. I managed to do it outside, by myself, without a lift, at night, uphill both ways, and in the snow.
The new clutch feels a lot better and doesn't seem much harder to pull at all. If anything changes I'll update again.

I have snap ring pliers but the ring doesn't have holes. it has like little grooves taken out near the ends of it. It's the stupid double ring setup. the trick seems to be to get the back ring pushed back as far as possible so the front snap ring has space to move.
