Question 500 Mile Service

Bought my 2013 Iron 883 a little more than a month ago and have just hit the 500 mile mark. When I bought the bike, the salesperson told me that I needed to have it serviced at 500 miles.

I checked my manual, the HD online service schedule, and called the service department at the dealer. All three of those sources told me that the first service for the bike is at 1000 miles.

I tried searching the forum and google for some answers and I see that some people are changing their oil at 500 miles.

Question:
#1 Was I given the run around by the salesperson? Was he just trying to boost the dealerships revenue by having me come in 500 miles early?

#2 What do you all do? 500 mile service? 1000 mile service? 500 mile oil change in the garage?

Thanks for all your help, I really appreciate anyone's thoughts and / or responses to this issue!

I changed the oil, filter and primary fluids at 500 miles myself and then took it in for the 1k service.

In retrospect I wish I had done all this at 50 miles and then again at 500

Just ride the bike another 500 miles. Stealer is just trying to make more money on service that isn't needed.

Hes main point is not to make more money. When you change the oil you'll notice tiny fragments in the oil, your oil will be sparkly. You want to change it at 500 so those microfragments do not damage your engine. This time is critically in changing your oil if you want your engine to last forever.

+1, yep, change your oil and filter, and service it at 1000.

On new bikes/motors, I do 100 miles, 500 miles, 1000 miles, then every 4000-5000 on synthetic (depending on type), 3000 on dyno oil.

You'll probably get a million different answers so it's really up to you. I will say that you'll never hear of a bike breaking down because of too much preventative maintenance.

Thanks for all the responses. I knew there would be a variety of opinions and I am leaning towards picking up a filter this weekend and getting some fresh dinosaur juice in there.

The service dept wants you in as much as possible. I did my oil at 250 , then this past weekend had my 1000 mile service done on my 12 Deluxe. You can have the fluids done early won't hurt anything .Follow your owners guide.
