No orange paint. I stripped the tank and hit it with a Scotch-Bright wheel. Sprayed the bare metal with bleach, gave it a few minutes then sprayed it with vinegar … instant rust.

Tomorrow I will wipe it down with rubbing alcohol. If I like the look I will hit it with a coat or two of matte Rust-oleum clear. Once dry apply my decals and clear again repeated times.

Gorgeous day so I took some time off and worked on my tank. Applied the decals and finished clear coating about one hour ago.

I didn't know you could induce rust like that.. pretty cool. I like the look but personally would have skipped the decals.

Thanks, guys ... I’m pleased with the results. The rear fender can wait until winter when I pull the back shocks to further grind and paint the frame. Now I must order my intake manifold seals before putting the tank back on.

That is some sweet looking rust, curious to see it back on the bike.

I would have taken a sanding wheel or something to the edges of the decal to give it a worn look so it matches the tank. I am getting some ideas for my hardtail... cool!
