Question Is this a Franken-Bike?

The photo below is of a ride that ended up on my father-in-law's lap when his son passed away. I'm not sure exactly what it is (or was). I'm guess it is a type of Sportster (which is why I'm posting here). Any insight as to what model this is build on and approximate model-year would be appreciated. On the other hand, as a u-built, it might be a Franken-Bike, in which case my question might be answered best with, "Which part do you want to know about?" . I've put more photos in an album here:

Thanks.

Not sure exactly. It's old, and cobbed, is all I can tell.

It's not a Sportster, I think it's a "sell it and use the money to buy a sportster"

Looks like a old hardtail with a wide glide or fatboy rear fender. This is just a guess.

70's shovel in a hardtail. Nice, but obviously not for all.

Neat looking scooter, I like the fat front tire.

Actually, looks like a very nice shovelhead, with a kick start. Does it also have an electric starter? Looks to me like the guy put some time into it. Switching out the jockey shift and clutch is not that difficult. I'm sure you can get a good price for it if the engine and transmission are good.

Junk, where are you located? I'll come haul it off as scrap for you.

I'm no expert but its a Shovel, not a sportster. Probably 70's to early 80's model in what looks like an aftermarket hardtail frame. Good looking bike. I'd love to have one.

judging by the front end and the majority of the parts, it started life as a early 80's fxwg, wide glide(shovelhead). its definitely a custom hard tail frame.. do you know what it is titled as? it needs a little cleaning and finishing, but could be a pretty cool bike again.
