Being new to all of this...I would suggest that you get an owner's manual for your bike. Alot of basic questions, like how to check your oil level, etc. are all covered in there. eBay would be the perfect source to get an old Ironhead sporty manual.

Oh and the correct way to check the oil is with it on the kickstand, on the newer ones anyway,

Be sure and check it after it has warmed up or about 10 min. after shutting it down. Sometimes it leaks by the checkball and you get an inaccurate reading causing you to over fill it. That's a mess.

Good looking bike you got there. Nice paint and it looks like it has been well taken care of.
Like somebody said before, it would definately be a good investment to get an official factory service manual. I attached a couple pages about checking oil that came from my 79-85 official factory service manual. This book has been priceless. I've heard that the official factory service manual is a lot better than any other manual out there. It's the only one I have so I don't have anything to compare it to myself, but I do know that it's a really helpfull book.
It's too big to scan the whole book, but let me know if you need a page or two on something and I'll try to help you out. I think you'll find that working on your motorcycle yourself will bring youa lot ofsatisfaction. [:@]But it's worth it. Good luck.
