Default HID kit questions

I have an issue with installing an HID kit. So I bought a hi/lo kit from ddmtuning.com. When i got the kit i pulled the headlight apart to attempt install. Now from this stage it looks as if install is just not going to work due to the control box. My question is; is there anyone else who has managed to install a similar HID kit or just any HID kit in their stock headlight successfully. If so please share detials on install etc.

Dustin,

I recently bought the 35W single kit from DDM Tuning. I didn't go with the high/low because I didn't want to externally mount the relay. With the single kit, the ballast was small enough for everything to fit inside the smaller headlight assembly on my 2010 Sportster 1200 Custom. I love the kit, but here's a couple of things I noticed:

1) The metal bulb shield that comes with the kit does not line up properly at the bottom of the bulb when it's installed in the reflector. Solution was to discard the shield.

2) When you turn the high beam switch on, the HID light turns off. This is normal when putting in a low-beam only light into a dual beam plug. The benefit of being able to turn off the headlight is that I always turn it off while starting. I found that if I leave the HID light on while starting, the draw of the starter will sometimes fool the ballast into shutting off. The only drawback here is that you have to remember to switch your headlight back on.

3) The beam pattern at night is somewhat all over the place. I rarely ride at night and I wanted the HID in order to be more noticeable during the day.

Hope that helps. I originally wanted the HD LED headlight but couldn't justify the high price tag. For $35 including shipping, this was a good alternative for me and everything was neatly tucked inside the headlight assembly.

much appreciated, i have a friend who has a spare regular h4 kit laying around so i may just give that a shot, unless the bulb would work without the hi/lo relay... if it does then thats good enough for me. It seemed a little tight in the actual headlight bucket for the ballast to fit as well, is the headlight on a 1200c bigger or smaller than the 1200n?

In thinking though, i wonder if it was tight due to the larger bulb that comes with the hi/lo kit.... hmmm

I went and measured and the headlight is a little over 5" across at the lens. I know the big bikes are over 7". The headlight bucket on mine is 6" from the front trim ring to the pointed tip and the back of the headlight.

Even with the slim ballast, it took a bunch of maneuvering the wires and the ballast inside the bucket for the lens assembly to fit back on, but it did.

hey guys, I was looking in doing the hid conversion to my bike but I wanna make sure that is the right move for me.. So if you guys could clear a couple things up for me it would be greatly appreciated.. First with installing the kit i was wondering if you would have to splice wires for the ballast. Second I dont want to lose the hi/lo so could i mount the ballast underneath the headlight cover? and the last thing is if i did get the hi/lo HIDs when i went to start my bike would it drain the battery or cause some issues with the electrical?
