to each their own for sure. i have a two inch lift on mine and the motivation came from wanting to get rid of all that plastic rubbish under the tank. i understand that you dont have to lift the tank to do this, but i think it looks better. being that i am the one riding it, that is all i care about... not everyone will always like your bike, so i say build it to your liking and if other people happen to dig it... sweet.

On a Twin Cam there is a cooling benefit to Tank Lifts. Also on Twin Cams, especially batwings, it reduces the turbulent air coming over the front of the tank.

On Sportys there is a small increase in air flow over the engine with a tank lift, WHEN it is combined with getting the coil out of there with a coil relo kit.

It is mostly for aesthetics...having room to tuck the wires, or just giving it a bit of a stretched out look.

Here's a vid of some sportys with tank lifts...give an idea if you like the look.
