Default Clutch Cable Bottoming Out

Hello. I have a 1999 Sportster 1200. All the cables were replaced a few months ago. Yesterday I was leaving work and pulled the clutch in. It disengaged completely but at the very end of the travel, it felt like the cable was bottoming out on something. It was quite a bit harder to hold down than normal. The problem seems to come and go. Any idea what it could be or how I could fix it?

Thank you.

It quit being able to pull in before you made it to the handlebar?

Yes. It doesn't hit the handlebar and takes more effort to hold down than it used to after it is pulled in 3/4 of the way.

I would start by checking the free play adjustment.

I'd start by doing a proper clutch adjustment, specifically the adjustment screw inside the derby cover, followed by the lever free play adjustment.

Did you do the work when all the cables were replaced? If you did it, check to make sure you screwed the bottom clutch cable connector all the way into the primary cover. Also check to see if the locking nut on the middle adjuster is tight and that the cable did not tighten up because of vibration. If all this checks out, cHarley is correct, you have to do a clutch adjustment inside the Derby cover. When you pull the Derby cover, remove the cable from the clutch and make sure the cable is free to move in and out without any undo friction. It's also a good time to lubricate it as well.
