To the OP: so what kind of deal did you end up getting?

I live in Hawaii where everything is marked up, and bought a barely used 2012 Iron 883 (blacked out version) on July 28th for $8,700, total it was $9,332 OTD. It had 1,482 miles on it and was sold brand new in Jan 12. Here in Hawaii, with additional mark ups, they go for about $12,500 stock off the floor.
The person who bought it brand new learned to ride, and put 500 miles on it before trading it back in for something different. When he bought it new, he added the screamin eagle air filter, v&h black shortshots and had the foot controls moved foward. He also changed the front turn signal lens covers from yellow to smoked. The total of upgrades was about $1,600 just in parts. One of my co-workers bought it, learned to ride and put the other 982 miles on it over 3-4 months before he decided to trade it back in for a 2010 softtail deluxe, which was more money.
I am a new rider myself having just gone through the BRC last month and this is my first motorcycle. I love it! It's perfect for me as I am 5'6 and about 200lbs. After riding a honda nighthawk 250 during the riders course, I have had no problems what so ever adjusting to my Harley. In fact it is much easier and smoother to ride being that its so new and the center of gravity is much lower than the honda.
The other advantage for me was I got one that has already been broken in, so I didn't need to worry about that being a new rider.
Anyway, it sounds like you are getting a very good deal for mainland prices. I paid a little above that, but again here in Hawaii everything costs more, mine is already upgraded, and dealers here are limited. I went where my co-workers shop as they told me I wouldn't get a better price on Oahu. I'm loving riding my 883 Iron after finally learning to ride at 39 years old. I wish I'd have done it a long time ago. Another great advantage to the sportster if you don't already know is there is an insane amount of customizations you can do to this bike to really make it yours.

About what I paid for mine as well, in the same area. 8k OTD is a good deal for a new bike.
