Default Trans Oil

Well, its that time and I can't seem to find any videos on youtube. Does anyone have a video, pictures, or detailed step by step on how to change my trans oil?

I'm stuck on a lay over flight in Frisco and plan to do my fluids tomorrow. Thank y'all for your help, I know this is a dumb question but I've started doing all my own work instead of paying extra to go to the indy.

Dunno if this is detailed enough, but this is what I do.

Get it warm.

Park inside, or at least in the shade. lol

Pull drain plug
Pull Derby cover
Pull inspection cover
Adjust primary chain tension (replace inspection cover)
Adjust clutch
Replace drain plug, replacing o-ring if needed and using teflon tape on the threads
Fill primary with HD Formula+ until it reaches the bottom of the clutch diaphram spring.
Replace Derby cover (using blue threadlocker)

Ride!

What DK said. I was worried about putting too much in, but it took 1 Qt. Now I know next time I can just put a Qt. in.

I have not done this yet on my new bike.

Can anyone tell me what size Torx I need for this... I don't have a Torx set yet.

I have the service manual. Was surprised to not find (or I missed it) what the size of all the fasteners were on the bike

In buying a Torx set, people warned me that it might not have all the sizes I need.

Anyone got an inventory of the Torx and other size tools I need to go basic maintenance on a Harley?

On my non-Harley bikes, I usually got a small tool kit with basic tools. No such luck with the HD Sportster 1200c

T27 in my bike. Likely same as yours.

Be sure and double check that the Torx bit set you're buying includes the T27 bit. The T27 size is not included in many bit sets and may need to be purchased separately.

If just changing fluid there is no need to remove the derby cover...just fill it thru the inspection cover. One quart of Type F ATF works just fine as well.

What's with these Sears guys - $6 for a single torx?

You can get a set of 13 including T27 for $16

Amazon Amazon

And, by the way, this might be useful for identifying/ordering gaskets & seals which they recommend you change
