The laws on pipes

RE: The laws on pipes
Yep. AMA and ABATE among others are attacking the probable cause direction. A quick distillation of their position:
1. Gotta have reason to check for legality of pipes, can't just check because you're curious.
2. The reason has to be objectively measurable.
3. Checking for the brand is only okay AFTER probable cause has been established.
In general, they're putting pressure on LEO and ordinances to ensure that a real method of measurement is used, that the measurement is able to determine that the bike may be out of Ecompliance with EPA noise regs, and that LEO is properly trained to use it. They're especially going after "reasonably trained ears" type of stuff. The EPA establishes measurement guidlelines for probable cause to check for "label match-up" but almost no agency uses it. Noiseoff and other groups are giving training for free to LEO and local govts including pics of "illegal" models of pipes. Apparently, Noiseoff'sposition is that if it looks like an illegal model, then it's probable cause. Gonna be a fight.
Just to be accurate, AMA has come out against loud pipes, but they're still against LEO pulling over bikes "just to see what ya can find."

Why not just have a little respect for your neighbors I won't fire up a lawn mower, chain saw, whatever, before 8:00 on the weekend or after 8PM. Mom taught me that weekends are the only time some people get to sleep in and some people have to get up early. Needless to say I also don't feel the need to show off my scooter by annoying everyone around me with the noise level. Have more respect and you might receive more.

Hey, I agree with you. I'm still using stock cans. I do have a problem if govt. starts a campaign where they give themselves the right to arbitrarily stop bikes to check pipes anytime they want. It's a slippery slope, IMO.
I grew up as a white kid in East LA. I never got stopped by a cop for anything, unless I was with a black friend. Then it was "hey guys, where are you going? Where do you live? What are you up to? Any weapons or drugs? Okay if I just check for your safety and mine?"
If a guy's running drag pipes in a residential neighborhood, then tag him. But to stop him to see if the slipons he's running haveEPA stamps? Just revenue production and an opportunity to ask those other 20 questions. No sir, I don't like it.
