I have run the SE slip on mufflers on three different Sportsters and have been happy with the results each time.

Make sure you don't put CFRs on without getting it tuned. They are not made to be compatible with stock Harley motors and need the engine to be tuned (run cooler) or they will discolor.

My stock mufflers are not annoying like some aftermarket slip ons or drag pipes. After 6 years of use i can say they are definately not quiet and unmistakingly Harley sounding. At this point in my upgrade process the mufflers are not on the top of the list. I dont feel like im riding a quiet bike thats for sure.

Zenmervolt gave the definitive answer. I'd just add the tone improvement for me is a deeper bass rumble, not just increased dB. The latest SE SP slip ons gave me a better lower frequency resonance over stock without being obnoxious.

the mufflers on my new nightster is quiet as ****. my biggest complaint is not hearing the bike at 70mph. i often think the other harleys are making fun of me because i am so quiet.

oh well, gotta save up for the bobcat i guess.

I bet you couldn't talk to a rider on the back at 70mph and have them hear you . I know i can't. With that being said i could care less if other riders are not amused by my lack of annoying noise levels. Stocks get louder with age/mileage.

Do you ride with earplugs? I had a hard time hearing my bike over wind noise from my helmet and I can actually hear the bike better now that I wear ear plugs because the plugs only really damper the higher frequency wind sounds and don't affect the low-frequency exhaust noises as much.

Of course, that may have more to do with my helmet so your experience may vary.

Here's my Youtube clip of my bike at idle with the V&H slipons with quiet baffles. It sounds louder than can be heard from the video though.

I changed my pipes because the sound sucked. I don't care what pipes you get, Pipes alone will not give you a big increase in power/ some will decrease your power. They will make it sound better. Do your home work and get what you think looks good with the sound your looking for. I'm running SE slip on drags with baffles. AND it's load, not ear damaging load, but they hear me coming. And I like the way they look.
