for those with gauges that display engine temps, how hot do they get? I picked up a Dakota Digital gauge for my 2012 Iron and the hottest I'll get is ~385 F. this includes both freeway and surface street driving. you guys getting about the same?

You would do well to take that temp gauge off and enjoy your ride! Don't get hung up about such things, your bike will be fine.

 

I wonder if the blacked out engines get hotter than the chromed out engines.

 

Head temp is 400F +/- a few degrees. PV with temp and tach showing.

 

I also qualify for the n00b title, and I was wondering the same thing. My oil temp gauge stays around 200F at running temp, maybe 220-240 on a scorching hot day after about 30-45 minutes of riding. I gotta 02 Sportster 1200.
