On a Sporty there should be no spray on the side of the bike with the DK Outlaw breather bolts.

Under HARD riding conditions in hot weather, there will be a very SLIGHT misting on the support bracket and a/c backplate.

If you are getting more than that there are several possible reasons-

Oil level is too high. It should be per HD specs, which you can read at the following link-
https://www.hdforums.com/forum/oil-r...oil-level.html

Worn rings or umbrella valves

Oil is old or viscosity is too low for ambient temps.

Correct viscosity is one that gets ignored a lot. The manual states that the recommended viscosity is SAE 50 if the lowest ambient temps are above 60* and SAE 60 if the lowest ambient temps are above 80*.

However, most people (and Harley Dealerships) are running 20-50 year round, then they wonder why in the middle of summer when temps are 75-100* (like they are in our area) they hear more top end noise and get so much blow-by.

The DK Outlaw Breather Bolts have two layers of foam filter in them, along with two wire mesh screens. These need to be cleaned periodically with hot soapy water. (5,000-10,000 miles depending on conditions) Using a 3rd layer of foam will also help slow down the oil if the need exists.

I run my sporty harder than most, and frequently ride in 95-100* temps. I only have the stock 2 layers of foam and get no misting along the side of the bike, but I do get some on the back of the a/c backplate and on the support bracket.

Anyone who is running our Breather Bolts and getting spray along the side of their bike after following the above HD recommendations, please contact us so we can help resolve this for you.

You don't really need to fill it to the FULL mark to check the difference of upright vs on the jiffy.

Next time the bike is hot, check the level, clean the dipstick, raise the bike upright, then back on the jiffy. If you then pull the stick, it will show where the level was when upright. That will give you an idea of what the difference amounts to. In your case since the bike is lowered, you will probably not see as much difference as someone with a raised bike would.

Yea, I am indeed running 20-50, got about 1200 miles on the current oil change. Plus the past couple times I noticed it I was running harder. Of course it's also hot now.

So yea, mostly my own doing, but at least the oil level is right. I wasn't terribly concerned something was wrong.

Got the DK breather bolts and air cleaner about 2 months ago and have never noticed blow-by on my nightster. Run the oil level like charley said. Been 100 degrees plus here in N. Texas the last two weeks and just finished a 50 mile ride at 70mph the whole trip. Nothing out of the air filter.

It's a Harley that's what they do. You can lower the oil in the tank but that only slows it down for a while. To get rid of the problem vent the crankcase to the ground.
