Default Widening the Front and Back Tires

Recently purchased a 98 Sportster 883 that has already been converted to a 1200. Looking to start modifying it for myself. I like the wider front and rear tires but want to keep it down in cost. What is the largest front tire I can put on a stock wheel and same with the back without having to purchase a conversion kit? Currently the front has a 80/90 -21M on the front and a MT 90E-74H on the back......any suggestions would be helpful. Thanks...

You might be able to go bigger after removing your front fender other wise it might not fit or it will touch.

Keep in mind, putting wider tires than your rims are designed for may sacrifice your wear....and safety. On the other hand, I've had a 150 on my Rev-Tech rim rated for a 130 (granted we had to "dremmel" the side wall to clear the belt and I now run a 140). Good luck and be safe!!!

Default Thanks

Planning on changing the wheels and rims but trying to avoid changing to chain drive or other expensive modifications and conversions. Will change out fenders as well to fit wider tire. Would like to go 120-130 on the Front and 150 on the back.

This a regular subject, so take some time to look through previous threads. You are limited on tyre width by your rim width. Different brands of tyres sometimes give different max rim sizes. You can do some simple research by measuring clearances on your own bike. The limiting things are fender clearance, at both ends, plus clearance to your belt or chain.

I'm running a Shinko 140 on the rear my '96, but needed to install a pulley spacer to keep the belt from rubbing. The only way to fit a 150 on your bike is by making modifications. The 110 on my front wheel barely clears the fender attachment points. FYI - The same size tire widths vary from one brand to another, so that's something else to consider.
