Hey guys im looking at a project bike. They say it is a 1976 iron head but it has a right side shift and everyone i have talked too says it cant be a 76 any info/input would be appreciated

 

1971 was the last right side shifter

 

The cases were amenable to a "right side shift conversion" - and lots of folks have done that. I'd get the VIN, and then you'll know what you have.

Just an FYI - I believe 1974 was the last year of the "stock" right-side shift, but, the '75s had the shifter pawl on the right, w/a funky linkage/crossbar setup to the left-side shift lever.

 

Thanks guys for all the info ill check it out, they are asking 1200 for it. But I just made a deal too swap out some flooring work for it. So ill get some pics up soon on it and the build I plan on restoring it back too original.

 

The first year left-side shift was mandated was 1975. That said, it wasn't until 1977 that the Motor Company actually redesigned the case to be true left-side shift. So it would be easy to revert back by just removing the linkages and installing a righty shift.

And like Mr. FXRT said, if you check the VIN (it will only be on the engine, just the year, model, and serial, no frame VIN) it will tell you the year. It will be the first 2 digits on the motor if it is original.

 

Well is it worth 900?

 

My dad always said it's worth what someone is willing to pay. Are you willing to pay $900?

 

I picked up my 72 for $1500 and it wasn't running. Didn't take much but it needs a complete tin overhaul....

Alright guys found out its a 73, and in the vin its actually the last letter and number that tells you the year the the first two are the model. That is 70s thru 80. And it is also on the frame and both do match.
