I'd say it all depends on what you want the bike for. I've got a Street Bob and my wife has an Iron 883. Totally different bikes, power and style wise. The 883 isn't even close to my bike in the power department. So if I'm going to be riding for more than 10 minutes or doing highway riding the bigger bike is way better. But, I have to admit, for riding around town the Iron is very fun and gets plenty of compliments.

It really depends on why you ride. Some people(like me) would be happy if I never had to get in a car again.
I have had a few bikes, and my newly acquired 883 is easily my favorite. I also have a big touring Kawi(has the ZX1200 engine) and I ride it for totally different reasons.(Like riding 500 miles a day)
The 883(or 1200) is really a "stop and smell the roses" bike. I can ride 40-100 miles on it, and feel like I have really accomplished a bunch. You see more, smell more, hear more and feel more. I find that on the Sporty I am much less complacent, then when I am on a bigger bike. You feel that you are really "part of the machine".
I opted for the 883 for a few reasons...
- I like being the "underdog" I am 5'10" 210lbs so I think I am not your "average" 883 guy(in pop culutre's view)
- I Love the sound of this bike
- The 883 Custom is one the Cleanest, best designed, smoothest flowing bikes made. When I think motorcycle the Sportster lines are what I think.
You don't buy ANY Harley for speed or handling, there are too many better suited machines for this. You buy a Harley for a sense of American pride, for nostalgia, to be noticed, and part of a "group". Harley's certainly are an image driven bike. Sporty's are HIGHLY underrated, but one thing is for sure, I have never met 1 person that has ridden one, that at least didn't say it was the most fun they have had on 2-wheels.!!!!
