Default starter not disengaging

Hi all,
I just bought a 1975 sportster xlh1000 and I have a problem with the starter not disengaging after starting the motor. Any Ideas where to start? no pun intended!

Starter relay and/or solenoid. I don't have an IH, but my old Ford Ranger used to do the same thing, frickin scary. I ended up changing the relay, which worked somewhat. Eventually the starter died (on a hot dusty street in Baja, no less) and I put together a new one at a Mexican auto parts store (in the next town) with my old one's nose cone assembly and another Ford model's starter motor. That was one fine day in Baja for sure.

Thanks for the reply John, so basically I should just change the whole starter?

I'd check the relay first, leave the starter until last as it's got to be more involved if it needs replacement.

Also try hitting the starter it self with the positive wire and see if the spring works back and forth. If yes then bad solenoid but good starter

it is the starter solenoid...there are contacts on the solenoid that will sometimes weld themselves closed and can be replaced or the solenoid itself will sometime stick in the energized position..this is prolly it...look at the picture and compare it to the one on the bike to make sure it looks right....
