RE: Here We Go!
Well, there is no choice for military....no liscence, no bike on base. They do have a class on base though, and when you pass it you get your endorsment. That part is good to go. However, there is an experienced rider course you have to take every two years, regardless of how long you have been riding....but, its a day off, so I guess it all works out. by the way...With all these guys comming back from Iraq and buying crotch rockets, I totally agree with the manditory beginner class.

Some Texas cycle facts:
1. You don't need a helmet if you can prove 10,000 insurance on you.
2. You don't need a license to have insurance on a bike. I have full coverage and don't have mine yet.
3. It doesn't matter how loud your bike is. As long as it has pipes, it can shake the earth but it is legal in Texas.
I plan on getting mine this week. I wanted to get the feel for the bike before taking the test. Yeah, I can take the class, but I have ridden bikes under the worst conditions and I think I can pass it. If I don't, I'll take the class this weekend and get my license the following week. One way or other, I'm getting it.

I think you should take the MSF class anyway, it is definatly worth it. Here in N.Y. I get a 10% reduction on all my vehicle insurance for 3 years.So the class pays for itself. About 1/2 of the people in my classknew how to ride, either from riding dirt bikes, or riding on a permit for a couple of years. Everone passed, and everyone learned something. Plus I met a couple of hot women there. There are also advanced classes, and classes to become an instructor.

Unless the laws in Texas have recently changed, you aren't required to have a helmet if 21 or older if you have successfully completed a state approved training class...
I believe the 'proof of insurance clause' only applies to those that have not taken the safety class.
Here is what I show for Texas;
"Required by law under age 21. Over age 21, riders are not required to wear a helmet with proof of successful completion of rider training or $10,000 of medical insurance covering injuries resulting from a motorcycle accident."
