1993 883 sportster air filter removal questions.
So I want to enjoy this beautiful brake in the heat today by giving the old bike a good cleaning. One thing I want to do is remove the air filter to accesss some of the engine behind it and make sure it's clean. Couple issues, the three screws in the middle unscrew but when loose don't come all the way out . Then how do i get the two huge what looks like torq screws to come out?if it is a bit does anyone know what size? Then it says on the housing removal may cause damage and since I'm waiting for my manual in the mail anyone know what I should make sure to becareful of?

Leave the A/C on until you buy a factory manual. The "two huge what looks like torq" (torx is the word you're after-these aren't torx screws) are the allen-head banjo bolts that secure the A/C backing plate to the cylinder head.
If you're dead seat on pulling that out to reach a few more spots, reinstall the three little allen-head screws that fasten the carb to the backing plate/intake ring, take the banjo bolts out, disconnect the fuel line, disconnect the vaccum line to the VOES and pull the whole backing plate and carb outta the intake. You should stuf a rag in the intake to prevent foreign matter from finding its way into your engine.

The two big screws are actually crankcase/head breather bolts, I believe they are Allen head as I recall. They attach the air filter to the engine. The three small screws seal the air filter to the carb. They are designed not to come out, so if they were to unscrew themselves they don't get sucked into your engine. Just take off the breather bolts and it should come off, it's also possible a vent line or two are attached to the back of the filter housing as well, depending on what state you are in. Easy operation, nothing to fear.
