Keep the RPM's up. The Sportster is not designed to have the clutch fully engaged with out enough throttle apllied......

And the model Sportster it is does not make a difference, Period.

Yes. I've only had Honda and Harley, but I've never seen one that didn't die if you let out the clutch without using the throttle. What did you ride in the past that would do that?

Than your idle is adjusted a lot faster than most Harleys or you're walking it with the enricher pulled out.

Sounds like walking a bike like that would be very hard on the lower end of the motor along with lugging the rpm's below the 900-1000 needed to pump oil into the top of the motor.

The comment about cutting off when letting out the clutch without gas is because of the ECU reading it that way. It's normal. Only carbed engines can do the "walk" without ANY throttle at all

On flat level ground I can walk both the Iron and the Street Bob. Granted you have to let the clutch out extremely slow.

It was a 250cc Honda enduro . . .so definitely a vastly different ride.

After a few more rides I've finally gotten it down. The takeoffs are significantly more smooth & consistent now that I've gotten more familiar with the clutch & throttle.

This got me to wondering, have had no reason to try it before, so on level ground, tried a no throttle idle takeoff. No problem! My 2000 883 does it smoothly, not a lot of clutch slipping required. Idle is 1000 even, on flat pavement. And at 240 lbs, I'm no lightweight. I've been using clutches for over 45 years, maybe the experience helps. Everybody gets better with experience.

I haven't tried it, but methinks my bike will idle at about 12 MPH on first gear. What I know for sure this is not my walking speed.
