Default Transmission problems (I think)

So, I went for a ride today with my buddy, and while we were out, I noticed a sound coming from my tranny. When I was at higher RPM's and decided to gun the throttle, I would hear a "smacking" sound coming from the transmission. It sounded metal on metal.

I recently, like two days ago, changed the primary and the engine oil using the HD Synthetic stuff. This is the first time I used the synthetic since I owned the bike.

Right now the bike has about 35,500 miles on it, and I am afraid that some costly repairs are on the way. If anybody may have an idea on what may be causing this sound, it would be much appreciated.

I have a basic understanding of engines and the like, but when it comes to transmissions, I am completely lost. Any help would be much appreciated! Thanks!

check your primary chain tension.
the "synthetic" just may have disolved some built up residue on the chain
loosening it up a bit

Different fluids dampen noise differently. Drain\refill the primary with whatever you were using before to see if the new synth oil is letting more sound out.
If so, no problemo.

some fluids do indeed dampen gear/bearing noise , how ever I have never seen a fluid make clanking sounds..

Alright, thanks for the input guys! I am hoping that it is just the chain that needs to be tightened or replaced, and not anything major. Thanks again!
