Default Oil Question

Well today I went to my H-D delaer to return some mirrors I got as a christmas present and came back with a few new chrome pieces .

anyway my question is when I took off the derby cover to replace with my new one about a shot glass worth of oil cam out of there. What kind of oil is in there and how do I replace this or should I just wait until my spring oil change since it wasnt that much oil that came out.

I think that your talking about your gear and Primary chain oil. If I am not mistaken it only holds about a quart of gear oil in there. I think I would try and top it off.
I also think you can add oil to it without removing the Derby cover. I added oil to mine through the primary adjust cover. just two screws and a rubber gasket and you can add the oil through that

It holds one quart of primary oil or se3 synthetic.Your only down one ounce of oil,I would not be concerned. That means you have 31 ounces left in there. The level may have dropped an 1/8 inch.I don't think it will hurt a thing. If you ever pull the cover off again make sure the bike is sitting level off the jiffy/kick stand.

Sounds like you need the XLH Service Manual, its a must have to keep your Sporty (or most any vehicle) running smooth. My Engine Lubrication section is soiled with oil from the use (and a couple spills) its had over the years.

drain the rest of the fluid and replace with a quart of the proper lubricant . $ 7.95 is cheap insurance for a clutch.

If you use anything other than the "HD Approved Fluid" (which is anyone's guess as to what they contain), it's best to use a fluid that has the JASO-MA rating.

This rating should be shown on the container, and verifies that the fluid contains no friction modifiers which might hamper the wet clutch operation in the future.

Oil such as Mobil 1 20W-50 V-Twin and Amsoil 20W-50 have the JASO-MA rating, and are perfectly fine to use in both the engine and combination primary/tranny on the Sportsters.

Agreed, I did the same thing when I installed a different derby cover. And I decided better to just completely change the tranny fluid than to risk mechanical problems. And the bike had about 4,000 miles at the time, so probably not a bad idea to change the fluid anyway.
