Im not going to be an *** like some of the guys on here man but let me tell you, I live in el paso Tx a border town and a huge army base its also here. half the drivers are from mexico and just dont give a F..K its bad enough in a car never the less on a bike. As well as the army guys(not talking **** cause they do a kick *** job out there) but when they come home from deployment they are doing 100mph minimum because they spent a year driving for there lives in the middle east. iv almost been hit a couple. this an everyday thing man. so I feel you on having that worry but I can reassure you, your daily ride is alot safer than mine. Just do what you will as you will.

You can be the safest best rider in the world and it doesnt matter. It only takes one idiot in a car to ruin your day or life.

I love the open road, the freedom, the wrenching, the experience. But is it worth the enormous risk?
You have to do what is best for your family. Do you live in a huge crazy place or a quite sane place? I rode when young then I moved to bigger places that had more than their share of drunk, crappy and just plain DGAS people and sold the bike. Now 30 years later I live in a quite sane place again and I have resumed riding. Even here though I have found that assuming they do not see me is not enough.....I pretend they see me and just want to kill me if given the opportunity
Your call mate.

Default Why Ride??

Because I love the feeling.Sure I have to keep my senses on high alert, but we should all do that anyway. My wife knows how much riding means to me and she's OK with it and when we were younger she rode with me everywhere. She even tells me she worries less when I'm on my Sportster than when I'm in our car or the truck I drive for a living.

Will I ever quit riding??I'm sure the day will come when my eyes or my strength will start to let me down.I don't have a death wish or a "macho" image of myself riding at 90 years old,but I do intend to ride as long as I can safely do so.You all know the feeling we get from riding and there is no other way to get it but "RIDE".

Everyone has a game plan for life, some play it a little safer than others. It's not a chance I'm taking,it's a choice,my choice and I accept the risks that go with that choice.

Ride safe,
John[the old]

Personal decision . If you don't want to ride then don't.

Coupla good points in this thread: It's all anticipating what the idiots are gonna do and positioning yourself as safely as possible all the time. Yes, there is risk involved in everything - car, bike, whatever. Statistically one is riskier than another. Your life depends on your skill and confidence, if you're finding your confidence in question then your skill will suffer. If you're having so many doubts about the worth of the risk then it may be time to hang it up for a while. You can always take it up later when the kids are grown and you have more time for leisure.
Bottom line is only you can answer this one for yourself and your family. Do what YOU think is right right now. It doesn't matter what we think.

I've had close calls but i was hit by two cars as a child and minor injuries. Your heart could explode without notice tomorrow or just have a bad final day. Why let it keep you from what you enjoy. When your time is up its up. Bottom line.

Looking back at every, and I mean every, close call I've ever had, I realized there was always a way I could have avoided it - all my fault. I know all about the 20/20 hindsight thing but seriously it's made me a better rider and the close calls are much fewer and further between.

I learned years ago you just have to pretend every body in a car is an idiot and they are out to get you. You will learn that being an alert extreme defensive driver will get you out of tons of mishaps before they happen.
