In my similar experience, I found the ground wire was not making a good connection. I removed the battery cables, wire brushed the ends, and then reassembled with dielectric grease snugging the cables down real well. It has solved the problem for 5 years which seems to be endemic with the Sportsters. Look around the forum and you will see a ton of posts similar to yours that all point to the connections of the battery cables. For the time being, loosen the ground connection on the engine, wiggle it around, and tighten well. Also tighten the cable connections at the battery. When you get the chance, perform the "full monty" as described above.
