Default Service manual question

Just picked up a second sportster on the the cheap. A 2008 883L for $3900. Ive got a manual for my 2011, I really dont want to buy another. Are they for "the most part" the same? Are there that many differences between 2008 and 2011?

That's a great deal, and I've always loved that particular bike.

There will be some differences between 08 and 2011. Even in years when there is no obvious changes, there are sometimes significant changes when it comes to mechanical details.

That's not usin' your noggin! You may find you can get the correct secondhand manual for your 'new' bike on HDF or Ebay and then sell your current one the same way. Or just get the correct one and sell your old one to a deserving cause!

Haha.......Im keeping both bikes. They are 3 years apart, the manual I have is for the 2011. I just dont think there were major enough changes to warrant another manual for the 2008 but wasnt sure, thats why I asked.

Well, the only obvious difference that I know of is the location of some items. The 08 had the ECM in the rear fender vs. the 10 which has it forward of the battery. Most of the components are electrically identical. I would guess that it depends on how far you go with using the manual, If you just use it for general service, bar changes and the simple bolt-on mods, then the one you have should be useful. If you get deep into electrical troubleshooting, ringing out wiring and such, then you may want to get the one for your 08.

You may want to ask around, I got my manual from a small shop that sold used parts and take-offs from the local dealership for $20, I got the Shop Manual and the Electrical Manual as well. Luckily I haven't had the need for it, but after my wire tuck and removing all of the wires from the connectors, I may be glad I have it some day. (I get really deep into stuff)
