Smile new to me 883 sportster

hey guys/gals i just purchased my 1st harley/cruiser! i also have a sportbike(05 ninja 636) but i have been in love with the bobber look for awhile and i ran across a 96 883 sportster and i had to have it! im not to sure about the details of the bike i just know the yamaha dealership i bought it from, said it was the owners freinds bike and they were selling it for him. I got a steal for a bike with only 900 miles on it! well i look forward to posting pics of my progress and im sure ill be asking tons of questions since im new to the whole vtwin/harley scene. im not sure what to do 1st i was thinking doing something with the handle bars since the stock ones are not my style. i like drag bars or clip-ons but not sure how it will ride with them like that. really is nice not to lean of the bike but im pretty used to it since i have the crotch rocket. another thing i was thinking was an exhaust system and if anyone has recommendations on which is a good system for performance and sound(im sure sound wont be an issue since it sounds loud with the stock pipes lol). ok guys thanks for reading, look forward to chatting with you guys soon

There is another current thread by the lucky owner of a very low mileage 2003 bike, I thought that was something!

As I mentioned to him, give your 'new' bike a thorough service, if it hasn't had one very recently. Also check the date on the tyres, as they are not safe if they are the originals.

Beautiful blue Sporty, lose the bars, lose the windshield. She sits real purty. I've got a 1991, no tachometer, do you know if that's an upgrade? I thought only 1200's had those.

Nice ride!

Super low mileage for the age. Even though it's clean, mechanically it's probably like a barn find. Less than 5 miles per month! So it's been idle a lot.
  • Flush the brake fluid! It's loaded with moisture by now.
  • Replace everything made of rubber.
  • Check the calipers, may need rebuild/replace
  • Drain the tank, look for water

Wow, nice find. Lots of options for handlebars, anything 1" diameter with dimples for controls will work. You might be happy with some take offs from a newer Sportster, some came stock with drags, some, like my '06 had "low rise" handlebars, I'm running drags now with the stock 6" riser that came on mine. I tried bars similar to the ones you have and didn't like them either.
