Default Question about chain

My rear tire looks like it's as far back as it will go, I have a lot of play in the chain. I was told the chain has stretched and needed to be replaced, taking links out would not be the correct fix as it would screw up the sprockets. I have an 80 sportster. Can someone offer their opinion whether to scrap the chain or just take out a link or two. Will I need special tools to replace the chain? Help a new harley owner enjoy his ride and wrenching the smart way!

Thanks

Unlike a belt, you can replace the chain without removing the wheel. Find the master link, remove the retainer and push the link out. Simple as that.

When replacing the chain count your links, don't measure the length.

If a chain is stretched that much you can wear the sprockets out faster because the links aren't meshing in the teeth properly...you may need to replace the sprockets if your chain has been stretched for a while.
