19" to 18" front wheel? good/not?

You might want to look into better rubber in general for the 19" before switching down to 18. I can't imagine that much improvement in pofile to warrant the change, maybe going wide glide with a 16 would do you. Also it seems 18s are pretty rare for the front and might require you to lace one custom.
This week I just switched from 21 to 19 and that did make a big difference. Bike feels less like a pig, with 13" rear shocks I have yet to rub any hard parts but I am giving it a go.

I was grossly dissatisfied with stock Dunlop and when it wore off I did my homework to get a better tire. I ended up with Avon AV45 Azaro-ST 110/80R-19. I'm a happy chap now. I can brake without locking up the front. I used to experience front skid in fast corners, not any more. Not to mention huge grip increase in wet. I do not care if it will not last (although after 2k miles it looks as new), I'll just get another one, it's worth it.
