Default Shifter shaft seal replacement.

*Hi there

A mate of mine who is away on holidays in NZ left me his Sportie for a few weeks to keep an eye on. It's runs a 95 EVO engine. I've kept it on a battery tender to keep it topped up and today being such a nice day took it for a 40K run.

I parked it and came out about 20 mins. later *and immediately noticed a small 10 cent sized leak of oil which is coming from the shifter shaft where it protrudes from the primary case.

I'd like to repair this for him before he gets home from his break and was wondering how easy it is? Can it be done without removing the primary case? Any tips or tricks appreciated.*

*

Cheers

The shifter shaft oil seal can be accessed and replaced by just removing the shift lever.

Does this apply to a 2009 Nightster also?I picked up the bike last night and it may be leaking a little from the shifter shaft where it slides through the primary.Do you just pry the old seal out after removing the gear shift lever?Anyone happen to know the part number for the seal?

After removing the shift lever, pull out the old seal with a dental pick type device. Put some electrical tape over the shift shaft to prevent tearing the new seal. Seat the seal by gently tapping on it with a deep socket of appropriate size and a mallet or hammer, being certain to go in straight. It's been a few beers ago, but I think I used a 13mm. Verify because I'm not really sure about the size.
