I'm 6' tall also and have a '10 Iron. You might want to consider keeping the mids and getting highway pegs. I find that I have much more control of the bike with mids and really enjoy stretching out my legs on the highway pegs when I'm on the open road. This option is much cheaper too. I bought a set of lightly used highway mounts/pegs for around $90 and installed them myself in about an hour. Just something to consider. Best of luck......

I got highway pegs instead of the forward controls. I feel I have better control with mids. I just got my highway pegs from craigs list for 40 bucks and they are HD brand. I just have to put them on yet.

Do any shorter riders around 5'9 have a preference on the mids vs forwards?

5"7 just installed forwards and for me it's a ton more comfortable takes the pressure off my arms resulting in longer rides

I agree, the forwards are much better. And really forwards on a sportster are like footboards on the touring bikes. It feels more natural, especially for taller people. I also concur with the HD kit. You get what you pay for and they are much more reliable.

These are the highway mounts I used. They attach directly to the frame and bolts atttach to existing holes in the frame.

Do they make extension kits to re-use your mids and move them to forwards? Just curious... or are the forwards completely different in design?

It's a completely new kit because the foot angle is different, and the mounts aren't the same.
