Same "clunck" as on a Beemer, is normal on a Harley, no reason to panic. pushrod noise around the heads when engine is hot is normal too, even if there are hydraulic lifters in H-D engines...

Yeah I am curious to know if this is normal. Just picked up a 2011 48 with 6000 miles on it and from neutral to 1st I get a pretty noticable clunk. 1st to 2nd and up. No clunk? Is this a pretty regular thing with the sportsters?

It's a regular thing with all Harley's. You may want to get it checked, you should have a clunk in all your gears. Neutral to 1st will be the biggest clunk tho.

It seems to be louder when downshifting than going up.

Ya i love the clunk. I usually stomp on it to hear it too. i was thinking the same thing when i bought my 2012 iron brand new. But i figured it was brand new and that should happen. your good to go though, no worries.
