Default Mileage

On the late model bikes what keeps track of the mileage? ECM??? If you remove the speedometer for a while and then put it back on at some point would it show the correct miles? Just want to verify.

I know if the VSS quits working the odometer quits as well.

Yes, but I think the milage is stored in the ECM and controlls the odometer
