Default Exhaust guide by decibels?

Is there any such thing as a guide where you can search this way? Are decibel ratings even available? If there isn't there should be.

Nope, SF. I've talked to 3 guys who've been pulled over with the same pipes as me, and a few others on big twins in the last year. Cops want to bust biker's ***** now I guess. I've been thinking of new pipes, and want something loud, but slightly quieter than my short shots. I'm a staunch member of the "loud is safe" camp, but I'm also big on avoiding tickets and fines.

I would think nobody'd give a crap in a one horse town, am i wrong?

Dunno. California is a little bit odd in some ways about that sort of thing.

Why? If the cop doesn't write enough tickets, how would they justify his wages?

By the time you consider the benefits, I'll bet we are looking at no less than $100K. So, if you don't write enough tickets, perhaps I don't need a full time "ticket printer". You wanna justify your job or perhaps be cut down to say 30 hrs week?

When we buy a brand new bike it meets the noise limits. The makers spend a lot of time and effort to achieve that. As soon as we start taking off the stuff that meets the regulations, we remove the dependable things and introduce variations. By definition they are not as predictable as stock stuff.

So I doubt if you will find decibel values for say a set of mufflers, because other changes to a given model will affect the final noise output. Exhausts aren't the only noise sources on our bikes. Different air filters will give different noise levels (the stock one is actually a silencer), as will different cams.

So I understand why you want information to help getting a 'better' exhaust, but doubt if you will find any useful data. Do the cops use a documented precedure to check noisy bikes by the roadside? If they do, get a copy and use it! If they don't, it is difficult to see how to get round the problem, except to deliberately buy a quieter exhaust.

I do not own VH Short Shots....

I recall an option of standard and quiet baffles...does the OP have the quiet baffles?

Also can the baffles be wrapped w/ more fiberglass to quiet them down further?

What grbrown says about the intake is true. I can definitely hear mine. If you know what your listening for you can hear the intake in this vid.
