Default question - rear shocks on a 48

Hi folks,

I know the suspension travel on the 48's 12" rear shocks is very limited.

Is it the shocks that limit the amount of travel? Or is it the fender/swingarm/bump-stops that limit it?

I am planning to upgrade the shocks to aftermarket shocks (but still stay at 12") if I do this would I get increased suspension travel???

Thanks for anyone that has the answers to these questions.

The travel is limited by the stock shocks which are harsh. You could try out a set of 12" air shocks off a touring bike. Those are a great improvement for cheap.

Yes, because the stock length on the 48 is 11".

There are many options ranging in price from someone took them off and didn't need them to a couple thousand dollars. If the end result is that you just want the ride to be "less harsh" I would advise not spending serious cash on shocks.

Thanks HERE...... so putting 12" air shocks will increase the rear suspension travel? How much travel would I get?

Thanks

Thanks UFO.... I'm looking to make it ride as smooth and comfortable as possible for a bike that definitely wasn't built with comfort in mind!!

How much exactly? I have no idea. For a little while I was running the 12" shocks with a 1" lowering kit to maintain stock ride height and the improvement was definitely noticable for the better compared to the stock shocks. It's a really great mod that can be done for $100 or less.
