when i first learned, i took my bike to a parking lot and just did maneuvers all afternoon, finally got my confidence up and took it to the street. The Safety course and your own skill training helps allot when you need to have instinct kick in. It sure saved my *** a few times. It never hurts to practice. And the clutch is your best friend.. never be afraid to pull it if your bike is getting away from you.

I was watching the new 'Ride Like a Pro' DVD last night and he talked about this topic. He basically said to just periodically ride the bike around the parking lot in 2nd or 3rd gear to give the clutch a break. He also mentioned turning the bike off and just letting it cool down some every once in awhile if you are doing a lot of practice.
