Noob and Practice on Little Sportster
I talked to a mechanic and he said that doing slow maneuver practice was okay if "aired" out in less than an hour. I asked because I was concerned about being air-cooled. Sounds like a long period of time with low rpms and a lot of clutch work.
What do you guys think is a reasonable amount of time to spend practicing low-speed maneuvers? I am a brand new rider and really want to spend some quality time getting intimate with the controls and such. So I really want to get good "walking" the line, u-turns, emergency braking, swerving, etc in a controlled environment before "getting out there with all the cages" .
Any recommendations on how to do that on a little sportster, xl883, without burning up the motor or clutch?
**Sorry Guys**
Don't know what I was looking at...did mean to post this in Sportster Forum...again, sorry.

I personally don't think its an issue. My girlfriend took the MSF class and we did a LOT of slow maneuvers at the local community college on an 85 degree day and never had a problem. I rode the bike there, she followed in the car. She rode for about 2 hours or so and I rode it home. I would just make sure your oil is topped off, maybe even new oil, just for piece of mind. Good luck and welcome to the slippery slope of owning an HD!!

I dont see it as an issue. It should be able to tolerate a few hrs at low speed. I would be more concerned about clutch wear and tear as new riders tend to ride the clutch starting off from a stop. Why not throttle up and take it up to speed 2-3 times every hr to cool her down? Also I dont think those 883's run as hot as a 96 or 103.
FWIW Its a reasonable question for any of the forums here.
