Default Good Lord these older Sportys must be easy to steal! Replace lock switch?

I had to pull the horn/lock bracket assembly today and realized just how damned easy it'd be to hotwire the bike. Someone with a little bit of knowledge could defeat the fork lock padlock with some freon, or just cut the aluminum bracket, then use quality alligator clips to bypass the ignition lock and voila, ride it home.

Any of you guys ever replace the lock with anything? I'm not overly concerned about my bike, it's older and insured, but I'd bet the guys with really nice bikes would be concerned about it. My lock bezel is pitted, so if I swap it out I'd look for something with a bit more shrouding of the back of it.

Locks are only made for law-abiding citizens. If somebody wants it bad enough, they'll get it no matter what amount of protection. To directly answer your question, I looked in to more security for mine, and other than an alarm system, I couldn't find anything I was satisfied with.

Sadly alarms are near useless now-a-days. Hell most car alams don't have an ignition cut off so you just pop the hood and disconnect the battery for a few seconds and it resets.

A rotor lock is nice, but really it's a motorcycle, two dudes can pick it up and put it in the back of a truck if they wanted.

You could try a "dead man's switch" just a simple on off switch thats hidden. with it off the bike has no power

I just have a push button starter switch on my sporty bobber right where the key used to be. If they want it that bad they can have it i suppose. They better hope i dont find them later though.

Haven't used a key for a very long time. Push buttons and toggle switches, and a suicide clutch & hand shift for theft deterrent, LOL.

To hotwire the 04's and up, you just need to splice all 3 ignition wires together.

Locks are just to keep the honest people out. If someone wants it that bad, they will take it no matter what. Although most theives won't put a whole lot of effort into taking something.

Since I have 5 degree cups on my 01 and cut the front fork lock off, I just use master locks on the front and rear brake rotors.

That is the truth. Had an 03 Honda 954RR sitting in front an apartment. Had it cable locked to the front wheel of another bike and a disk lock on each front rotor. They cut the cable, pulled the ignition plug, and removed all the bolts from the rotor to by pass the locks. Luckly they didn't get the bike.
