Default 09 Sportster 1200 Spark Issue

Short story my bike will not fire on the front cylinder unless I close the gap on the plug down to like 10. Normal is 40.

Then when it warms up it still runs rough going under 30 and accell from zero to thirty.

Now Long story. I had someone check the coils said they were good. Plugs have been changed. Got new gas put heat in it. Power commander helps richin it up a bit to run better but still need that really close gap.

I'm back to thinking it's the coil. But don't want to waste $109. Dealer won't take that back. Other thought is it might be the ECU or Brain. But that's $349,

Any ideas I'm open. Not really wanting to take to Dealer as they wanted crazy money just to take a look.

Oh I also replaced all of the exhaust gaskets so there are no leaks.

Have you checked the plug wires for continuity...??

Check your spark visually. Pull the plug out and put the threads up against and touching the engine fins. Turn the engine over a few times and make sure the spark appears blue. This should be done with a normal gap of .038-.043 in or so.

If it's orange/white, then either you need to check the coil itself or wires.

Since it won't arc a larger gap, I'm guessing the coil is going bad, or the wires are so degraded they are leaking voltage. As far as the wires leaking though, you could probably feel the electricity if they were leaking enough to weaken the spark that much.

It also wouldn't hurt to check your Crank Position Sensor (CKP) for proper functioning. It is a relatively cheap part that can give bad running problem if it starts to go.

And last, have you done any major motor mods? In motors that run high compression, a smaller spark gap is needed because you run into problems with not being able to bridge the gap, flame out, etc. I highly doubt this is your problem, so you can probably disregard this, but I'm just covering all bases.
