It all depends on the type of helmet you are wearing...
I normally wear a 3/4 Helmet and with that on there is no air to be pushed for good sound. I had some $80 earbuds that sound extremely good with loud bass, but when wearing under 3/4 helmet, like I said there is no air to push so it defeats the purpose of the bass...

On the other hand, when I wear my half helmet. At low speeds they sound great. Once I hit around 50 I can't really hear a thing.
I stick with my Iphone headset.. Not all that great but its not that bad...

I just wear the ones that came with my phone, but I debated buying a bluetooth helmet and just doing it that way.

I've been using the skull candy ones with my 3/4. I also have a FF helmet with the bluetooth but on the highway without a windshield I couldn't hear anything.

I use helmet speakers in a 3/4 helmet that has a face shield. Wearing two earbuds is illegal in VA, but speakers aren't. I also use a pocket-size amplifier from Boostaroo.com. WFO and Skynyrd never sounded so good.

Etymotic in the ear. No interference with the helmet pads.

Beats by Dr. Dre. 100 bucks but awesome. If you have an iPhone you can answer the phone while riding if you want, also volume control and on/off all in line. Bonus, there are about 10 different sizes of the rubber pieces that fit into your ears.
