Default Definitive Oil Answer

So I've done a little searching, and found many many views/opinions...but...

Am I right in saying I can stick 20W-50 semi synthetic (or mineral) in both the engine and primary? Bike is a 2001 883 Sportster....

Thanks!

20 /50 is the right weight for engine some like Mobil some like amsoil or HD.
syn or dino your choice.
In the primary i use hd formula plus just because i know it's made for the bike.

I run Rev-Tec 25w60, (non synthetic) in the engine and Harley Formula plus in the primary/tranny.

I used to and it worked just fine. As far as I can tell, didn't do any damage.

HOWEVER...last time around switched to Mobil-1 75w-90 Gear Oil for the primary/tranny and I like it a little better. Seems to be smoother so if you ever want to try something different check out Mobil-1 75w-90 Gear Oil.

I just talked to my mechanic at the HD shop about oil.....I was thinking about switching to all AMSOIL for both bikes and here is what HE told me

He opened his cabinet and there was a half dozen bottles of Amsoil 20W50 MCV...

He runs it in the motor of his EGC and formula plus in the tranny and primary. Just over 100K miles on it and never touched other than a 95 big bore kit installed

He told me to do the same for mine. And for my sporty to run AMSOIL 20W50 in the engine and formula+ in the primary/trans

use amsoil if you wear a lot of brand names and have a harley-themed garage. use royal purple if your parents only stopped arguing long enough for dad to make a 1/4-mile run. use mobil 1 if you think a white scarf and a pipe are right-on.

its just a motor and transmission. one needs gear oil, the other does not. use a workable weight and change it before it gets nasty. every once in awhile send a sample off to the lab to see what they say.
