Default Rich or lean, Idle High or low?

I went to go for emissions today and failed. My Hydrocabons were fine at high rpm's. coming in at 116 when the standard is 500. But my final reading at idle came in at 3721 when standard is 1800. A while back I changed the a/c and pipes. turned down my idle and turned up the mixture a little bit. Any one know which way I should go to bring that down? lean it out a little bit more? or do I have to bring my idle speed up a little bit?

I assume your talking about the sporty in you sig pic. Do you have an adjustable pilot? I have a EZ tune pilot adjustable in mine, you can reach under the carb and turn it with your fingers. I'd carefully set your pilot for max idle speed then 1/2 turn in from there. I don't think you can bring your idle up enough to get the carb off the idle circuit so go for the pilot and if that doesn't do it down jet.
I don't pretend to know what the emissions numbers are but if it's tuned right you should pass.

I would bring the idle up a bit and run the idle mixture screw in a bit to lean it out a little.

TY for the response. I'll do that and run thru emissions again Tuesday.

Then 5 minutes later I would idle it back down and turn the mixture screw to richen it back up so it runs right.

Yes,defiantly do it after you pass insp!

One little note, as you turn the idle mixture in to lean it out it will idle up some. I usually set the idle, run the mixture screw in till it starts to run rough (too lean)then back it out till it smooths out. Then reset the idle. If you have a vacuum port and a vacuum guage to hook up, the highest vacuum reading Is optimal .

Also, make sure the bike is hot as hell when they stick the tube in. No need for bike emissions in my state, but we must do so with our cars. That was the only way I could get my old Bronco through a few years back.

TY all and I will post tuesday when it passes. And mcain49, I lowered the idle a while back. It's slow enough that I can almost count exhaust strokes. Guess I may have it a little too low.

Just don't drop her below 950 rpm idle or so. The oil pump is gear driven, and below 950 rpm it doesn't create enough pressure to get all the way up to the top end. It won't show the idiot light for oil pressure, but it won't be properly lubricated.
