I just paid $3k for a 2000 hugger 883 with 4800 miles...in good shape ( a few minor scratches...almost stock ( se exhaust, forward controls)....just to give you idea of what you can get if you look enough...

Keep in mind, the early bikes were the first series of Evo engines (that '87 is only the second year of production) and were equipped with a 4-speed trans before '91. They are usually quite a bit less money than the later 5-speed machines with belt final drives. You should be able to find a much newer Sportster for your $3000.
