Exclamation 2009 Sportster Battery drain

Good afternoon,

I have a 2009 Nightster and I am having an issue with the battery. The original battery lasted 2 1/2 years, I replaced it w/ an Interstate battery and I have been having problems ever since. The battery is draining too quickly and I am not sure what the problem is? I have had replace the battery 3 times in the last yr.

I finally bought a battery tender but I have not hooked it up since I just ordered it.

Any ideas what could be causing the battery to drain so quickly?

Thanks,

Floyd

could be a relay not closing. could be security - if you have it. could be connections not tight. could be alternator / regulator related. get an amp meter and use it on your fuses to see what if any are drawing current and your regulator to see if it is working properly. Battery Tender + always use it even in warm season. if you don't have an service manual look on line (ebay) and pick one up. they are worth the $ and cheap. good luck. ride safe and often.

What is your definition of too quickly? If you are talking about a few days or less, then you may have a problem. If you are talking about a month or two, that is about normal if you have the security system. Sounds to me like you already have the answer, you just need to hook it up.

The battery is less than 3 months old and I do not have a security system on it. There is something that is draining the battery, I have to figure out what it is? But hopefully the tender will fix it.

Thanks and happy new year.

ok unhook ground cable at battery and put a test lite between ground post of battery then touch the frame ground (has to be good ground) and see if the test lite lites if it does you have a short some where.

Don't mean to hijack but i got the same problem w/my 07 1200L so maybe my question will help KC also. Tried the above and yes I have a short. My battery drains fast and the tender doesn't help. got power but not enough to crank. when I hook up the hot cable it's good but when I hook up the other cable with the main fuse on it there's a spark. any idea's?

The battery has been recharged and I finally installed the battery tender, I guess I'll know if this works in the next few days. But if it is a short, I will have to take it to the garage and have them check it out.

Happy New Year and safe riding.

I'm very big on alternative parts for the bikes. But from what I've heard.. The HD battery is better than the slight savings you will get from other battery options.
