Default Oil Change Q

Ok I searched to forum but came up empty/didn’t believe what I read.
How many quarts of oil does the 1200 take? The only thing I found with my search was 3 quarts – which I find hard to believe considering my v6 F150 takes 4.5. I am only changing the engine oil before winter and will do the trans/primary in the spring. Thanks guys.

That's what my sporty takes, too. It all stays in the tank except for what's currently circulating. Called a dry sump system in the car world.

Think I used 4 quarts total, one in the tranny and 3 for the crank.

Should be closer to 3.5 qts (believe it, or not), but unless you scavenge it - you'll get ~2-2.5 qts w/warm bike.

With just the 3 quarts I'm half a quart low on the dip stick.

For my 09 1200C I put in 3 and no more than 3 and then 1 quart in the tranny. It says in the manual.

A factory New, Dry motor holds 3.6 quarts.
Draining the oil for an oil change doesn't completely empty the oil system, so a refill should only take about 3 quarts.
Many people have learned to leave the oil level about 1/4 quart low to prevent oil blow-by from the breathers into the A/C, so that would be about 2.75 quarts for the refill.

Overfilling the oil bag can cause bad things to happen.
I install 2.5 quarts then take the bike for a 10-20 mile ride to give any air that's in the system time to work it's way out. Then readjust the oil level as required, to about 1/4 quart below the Full mark on the dipstick.
