19 here and love my 04 Sportster. Been riding friends bikes for a few years now, got my first bike this spring then about a month later bought the HD.
Graduated high school last spring, was lucky enough to have five best friends who all rode, we all have sportsters! Guess the cost was part of it but well all love our bikes. The groups not riding as much lately with two guys leaving for the military and one moving south, hope to all get together next summer and ride. For me HD was the only bike I wanted because of its style and american legacy. Sport bikes just don't feel right to me.

Like someone mentioned before, go to any military installation and you'll see a lot of Harleys. The barracks are full of young people. You'll see almost as many cruisers as crotch rockets.
I'm guessing it's a money thing when it comes to Harleys. A 20 year old in the military is probably making more than their buddies back home. If you join at 18 you should be a SGT by age 22. That's some good money for a 22 year old with no college education. They can afford a Harley.
Are Harleys overpriced? I don't know. I took a bad spill a month ago and there was very little damage. You had to really look to see any damage. I rode it home after being released from the ER. On the other hand, the damages that the other guy's insurance company has to pay for is $5500 because they're going to replace the frame, fuel tank, about a million other things, plus the cost of labor. A lot of brand new crotch rockets cost that much.
